In Cambodia, the district of Choam Ksant in the Province of Preah Vihear is marked by a long history of immigration and conflict with their neighbour, Thailand.  The under nourishment indicators of this district are bad and there is very little NGO activity in the region and for these reasons was chosen for a Link NCA study.

According to the latest Demographic Health Survey (DHS), the prevalence of chronic malnutrition was very high, reaching 44.3%, whilst the prevalence rate of moderate acute malnutrition reached 13.8%.

The following major risk factors have been identified:

  • Defecation out in the open and unhealthy environment,
  • High prevalence of illness in children,
  • Poor care practices,
  • Overworking women.
